The Colorado Rockies finally achieved 50 wins before the end of the season next month. Congratulations to the second hottest team in baseball — the also bad Seattle Mariners had gone 9-1 heading into the weekend — on their 8-2 run (prior to Friday’s 5-3 loss to the Cubs) that has been led by the young corps of the Rockies. Sweeping their way out of Citi Field for the second season in a-row, the Rockies Eric Young Jr (now injured), Tyler Colvin and Josh Rutledge have helped lead Colorado to a very fine winning streak as of late. Credit is due despite their terrible 50-73 record overall.

Seventeen and a half games out of the second NL wild card slot, the Rockies are playing for themselves and the remaining fans. The season, a colossal waste of batting talent, was lost long ago, but the players have not quit. And despite the litany of injuries that have contributed to the losses and lack of success, the players haven’t quit.

You have to give the Rockies clubhouse their due in not trotting out onto the field and mailing in their “best” effort day-after-day.

Luckily for them, the Rox have a very good shot at extending their winning ways as they visit the even more awful Chicago Cubs … a team that can commiserate with the Houston Astros in really knowing what losing is like, all the time. But after Friday’s loss to the woeful Cubs, the Rockies need to sweep the next two games to win the series.
