In the Rockpile: Rox tie D-Backs, White arrested

Hit the panic button! Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez didn’t get a hit in the first game of spring training!

Just kidding. It’s only the first game of Cactus League play for the Rox. It takes awhile for teams to hit their stride and get into the habit of ripping balls into or out of the field against live pitchers and crowds.

The Rockies tied the Arizona Diamondbacks 1-1 after 10 innings on Saturday. Newly acquired catcher Ramon Hernandez delivered the Rockies lone RBI by scoring Michael Cuddyer and led the team in hits with two. The Rockies fielded more players due to Arizona playing a split squad. The result: Rockies minor leaguers entered the game to spell the starters or pinch run.

Good news, as well, was starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz struck out two hitters, walked one and allowed two hits. No runners scored during his shift.

A 1-1 tie with the NL West champs is no cause for concern after one game of Cactus League baseball.

Pitcher Alex White arrested

White was arrested and released Saturday on suspicion of DUI in Arizona. White apologized to the team and will not be fined or suspended.

Not a good move by a guy trying to move up in the organization. He’s lucky he won’t be punished as “he only had two drinks” according to GM Dan O’Dowd. Either way the players were told prior to the beginning of spring training that Scottsdale is a risky place for ballplayers to screw up in as the eyes of the city are all on them. It’s easy to say “call a cab,” but after “two drinks” it’s not far off to say that most of us would think nothing of it.
