Friday fantasy roundup: Strasburg, Longoria, A-Rod

It seems like only yesterday that we were discussing the 2011 events; however, 2012 has come upon us like a wild puma. Get ready for the insane. People are going to jump onto players who have no business of anyone owning. People are going to throw around these name like a wild banshee, but you must remain strong and vigilant. Always wait for the right prey and then strike!

Now, onto the headlines!

Any worries about Stephen Strasburg diminished this week with a strong outing in his season debut. He is definitely a buy-low, sell-high kind of guy; however, do not sell him too early because he is going to give top-15 production until his innings cap kicks in.

Those in deeper leagues who drafted Justin Morneau could not be happier to find out he will be the Twins DH to start the season. Big boost in his value because owners will not have to worry about him getting injured in the field. He has had a huge spring that will hopefully carry into the regular season.

Those taking Johan Santana in the later rounds should have been super excited about the results from opening day. Though he did not last very long, his command was on point, and he looked very sharp on the mound. Expect a big, comeback season from this guy.

Another veteran pitcher, Erik Bedard, looked impressive in his opening debut with the Pirates. He went seven strong innings while only allowing one earned run. Even in 10-team mixed leagues, this guy could be a sleeper pickup.

The Yankees-Rays was all that and a bag of chips for fantasy. Evan Longoria took his first steps in what maybe is the start of a monster season, while Mariano Rivera took the first steps towards retirement.

Who is the closer for the White Sox? No, I am asking you. This mystery remains unsolved, even with the Sox playing their first opening season game. I traded for Addison Reed in my keeper league, and I hope this move pays off. Right now, I would advise yearly leagues to stay away.

Opening day turned into a nightmare for a few teams. First Jose Valverde blew his save opportunity against the Red Sox, then the Andrew Bailey relief team comprised of Mark Melancon and Alfredo Aceves also blew their chances. I was down on Valverde to being with, and the Red Sox mess is a situation to be avoided unless you have no closers.

Alex Rodriguez is on the tipping point of his career and this story sheds some more light on it. I am expecting a Kobe-like year from A-Rod.
