Returning from another fruitless road trip (2-4), some of the Colorado Rockies were able to get out Thursday to visit some of the victims of last week’s movie theater shooting in my hometown of Aurora, CO.
Lending goodwill and community support to those still in the hospital almost a week later: manager Jim Tracy, Todd Helton, Michael Cuddyer, Eric Young Jr., Josh Rutledge and others. It was a very kind gesture on their part to not spend their day off entirely at home, but following in the footsteps of the Denver Broncos, President Barack Obama and “Dark Knight Rises” star Christian Bale by spending part of the day with some of the survivors of the worst mass shooting in United States history.
Noticeably absent was Carlos Gonzalez; I’m interested in hearing his excuse, as he is the face of the franchise with Troy Tulowitzki out. I’m very surprised I also did not see Dinger at the hospital, as the Broncos mascot Miles went along with the team to visit the hospitals.
While the community is still trying to recover and the victims have an even longer road, the outreach by the local sports teams, the President and Batman himself go a long way towards brightening the day of those who were at the theater or have been taking care of them in the local hospitals. “This was a terrible tragedy and anything we can do to divert their attention, or make them think about something else or maybe put a smile on somebody’s face, is worth it,” Helton said.
The Rockies haven’t had much to be proud of this season, but this most certainly is their biggest achievement thus far: spending time with those whose lives have been upended in the worst possible way, and thanking the hospital and emergency room staff for their efforts.
