The Colorado Rockies kept it in the family this week by extending a two-year contract to center fielder Dexter Fowler for $11.6 million.
The Rockies are sticking to their mantra of growing and developing homegrown talent, and Fowler’s contract is further proof the Rockies are more apt to develop their own star players and not look elsewhere, unless it’s on the cheap.
Fowler was the subject of trade talk during the offseason after his career year in 2012 and was rumored to be a part of different trade scenarios with Cincinnati and Philadelphia. The Rockies ultimately would not part with him and offered him a couple more years in Colorado for a nice chunk of change.
In 2012, Fowler set personal bests in RBI (53), batting average (.300), OBP (.389) and slugging (.474). He has played for Colorado since 2008.
Dexter Fowler’s glove and bat are an asset to the team as long as he maintains the level of production he mustered last season. He is of more use to the Rockies on their roster than on another where the Rox would potentially gamble on giving up a solid outfielder and a base stealing threat.
