Troy Renck of the Denver Post tweeted out Saturday that former MVP and current Rockies slugger Jason Giambi may be playing his last ballgames in Coors Field and could be gone before the end of July.
One of the worst parts about a team performing poorly is that some players are going to be dealt as the front office starts carving up the roster. Giambi’s days are numbered, as they allegedly were last year, but this really may be it for the Giambino. The market for an everyday DH is always open, and Giambi would be an easy pickup. The Rockies have found some success lately, but the hole is far too deep to even put some hope into. It’s that time of the season where a basement dweller has to start dealing players – offload contracts or pick up some players and cash.
If only they could sweep the entire month, maybe Giambi wouldn’t have to go.
That prospect is beyond their reach at this point. The long-awaited All-Star break is coming, and Giambi could be gone, as well as Marco Scutaro or Tyler Colvin. Those three would be worth quite a bit, even Michael Cuddyer. Nobody is safe or should be safe, except Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez and Matt Belisle. The Rockies won’t send away their moneymakers and the dependable reliever.
But then again, I am speaking about a front office that isn’t honest with the fans or itself.
