Red Sox sign Dennys Reyes; joins crowded bullpen

According to FOX Sport’s Jon Paul Morosi, the Red Sox have finalized a minor
league deal with free agent pitcher Dennys Reyes. The contract is reportedly worth
$900,000, with playing incentives that could bring the total value to $1.4 million. Reyes
has been in the news this winter, as the left handed reliever has drawn interest from
several teams. He had agreed to a contract with the Phillies, but it was never finalized.

In the last five years, Reyes has been used solely in relief. During that span he
averaged 65 appearances per season with an ERA of 2.63. In 2006 he had a career low
ERA of 0.89, and last year it was 3.55. In 14 seasons, he has pitched in 143 save
situations, compared to only 11 blown saves.

Reyes will join a Boston bullpen consisting of Jonathon Papelbon, Daniel Bard,
Hideki Okajima, Bobby Jenks, Dan Wheeler, Matt Albers, Scott Atchison, and Felix
Doubront. Boston is clearly looking to improve upon last year’s bullpen ERA of 4.24.
