In the Rockpile: Jamie Moyer cut by Rockies, retirement near

Jamie Moyer‘s time in the league is just about up as he was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies Wednesday to make way for reliever Carlos Torres.

What was supposed to be some coming-of-age (again) story has not written itself as intended. Rockies Manager Jim Tracy said of Moyer: “I just felt like that by sending him out there, we were compromising him and the team.”

That is one of the most accurate assertions made by one of the voices of the team in recent weeks. The unfortunate part is that it is eight games too late, as Moyer has gone 2-5 in 10 starts.

He set the record as the oldest pitcher to win a major league game against the San Diego Padres April 17, but has only won one game since. Moyer, unable to work beyond more than five innings in most starts, has become a detriment to the rotation since hitters have figured out how to attack his slow pitches.

It’s likely he will retire as there isn’t anything left to prove for the 49-year-old pitcher. The Rockies can move on, and Moyer can enjoy his retirement knowing he has a milestone in the majors that most likely will never be passed.
