Founder and President: Jamie Shoemaker
Jamie founded Through The Fence Baseball with the idea that writers and fans from across the nation could passionately write about baseball and would interact with baseball personalities. With that said, he wanted the site to cover and deliver news on every aspect of baseball, from the majors to the bat boys. Let’s face it, he’s a baseball nut. Jamie comes from a baseball background.Growing up, he played baseball from age 6 all the way till his last college at-bat, while watching baseball almost every day on TBS. After college, Jamie immediately started working in the Division II athletic department that he graduated from with a Businesses Administration – Management degree. As a Sports Information Director and Compliance Coordinator, he was featured on CoSIDA as a Sports Information Director in the fall of 2008. Shoemaker has since worked in the field of Instant Replay, Social Media, and Marketing. His love for baseball has never stopped.Jamie can be reached at throughthefencebaseball@gmail.com. Further, his personal Twitter account is located here
Design and Content Director: Brad Congelio
Currently a PhD student in Sport History, Brad is studying, and writing his dissertation on, the presidential involvement of Ronald Reagan on the 1984 Olympic Boycott. He is also highly-interested in the recreational culture of the Black Hills gold rush (and, thus, the story of the little known Mt. Rushmore baseball team). Brad currently holds a Masters degree in Sport Management and an undergraduate degree in journalism. He was awarded the 2007 Cochran Award for Outstanding Achievement in Collegiate Journalism. Brad can be contacted at bradc@throughthefencebaseball.com.
Senior Editor: Jonathan Sumple
After an elbow injury in college ended Jon’s dreams of pitching in the pros, he opted for the next best thing: sports reporter. He covered prep and community sports as a correspondent for The Ledger in Lakeland, FL, while attending Division II baseball powerhouse Florida Southern College. During the summers, he was The Ledger’s beat writer for the single-A Lakeland Tigers and Winter Haven Red Sox. Upon graduation, he landed a position at The Leesburg Commercial in Central Florida where he covered the USFL’s Orlando Renegades, Tampa Bay Bucs, Florida Gators football, PGA golf and prep sports throughout the region. He twice won the Florida Sports Writers Association first-place award for investigative journalism on the subjects of steroid use side-effects (1985) and chewing tobacco health-impacts (1986) – with the latter facilitating rule changes regarding tobacco and snuff usage at local high schools. Jon left the sportswriting world for a 20+-year marketing career in South Florida, where he was a season-ticket holder for the Florida Marlins from the inaugural season until 2009, when he relocated to Seattle. His business career required frequent travel, allowing Jon to attend baseball games at 20 different MLB parks over the years. He vows to complete the circuit in the not-to-distant future. Jon can be contacted at jonathans@throughthefencebaseball.com
Editor: Bob Flynn
Bob Flynn grew up in upstate New York as a fan of the Montreal Expos and has been a baseball fan all his life. He attended Florida Southern College, and while he was unable to play baseball there, he did the next best thing: cover the team for two years while working in the sports information department. He lives in Gloucester, Va., with his wife and two children. His hobbies include baseball, soccer, bike riding, racquetball and most sports.
