The Rockies best relief pitcher, in my opinion, was given a year extension plus a mutual option for 2014. Keeping Matt Belisle in the bullpen is most certainly a card you want to keep in your hand to play.
Belisle is crazy durable and easily the best go-to option if you need someone to cover a blown start. He led all MLB relievers with a 10-4 record because he’s that good at picking up the pieces and putting the game on his back.
Belisle has a real good arm and a knack for sending batters back to the dugout with a zero for the AB. It’s this reason alone the Rockies got this extension done, but Matt also can hit the ball better than most pitchers when called upon, second to Jason Hammel on the Rockies.
The guy is solid on the mound and would be worthy of having his jersey in my closet, next to my Joe Beimel jersey, which I usually get positive comments about at games by those who appreciate obscure jerseys.
I’m glad the Rockies didn’t send him away because he would be sorely missed if he was allowed to walk after next season or traded during this offseason. He is an integral part to the Rockies bullpen.
Spring training is coming, and so is Kenny Powers!
It’s almost time for spring training, and the Rockies announced their list of non-roster invites. Notable invitees are Nolan Arenado from the single-A Modesto Nuts and recently signed bluebird special, Jamie Moyer.
Speaking of pitchers, the best and most self-absorbed, washed-up pitcher, Kenny Powers, of “Eastbound & Down” is returning to HBO the same day pitchers and catchers report, February 19. I cannot wait for what is going to be the final chapter in the story of “the man who has the ball, the man who can throw it faster than f**k.”
Rockies beat reporter Troy Renck of the Denver Post told me via Twitter that Kenny Powers is popular in the Rockies clubhouse, which should be no surprise.
