Sources are saying Javier Vazquez has signed with the Washington Nationals and the deal will be announced in a few days. GM Mike Rizzo recently flew to Puerto Rico to watch Vazquez pitch. MLBTradeRumors.com also reported that the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox were also in attendance.
Vazquez said he only planned to play for a contender and was reportedly planning on waiting until after the World Baseball Classic to sign, but the Nationals are announcing the deal in a few days.
This deepens an already strong rotation and adds insurance for the recently signed Dan Haren.
Vazquez last pitched for the Marlins in 2011 when he posted a 3.69 ERA while going 13-11 in 192-plus innings pitched. He finished fourth in the Cy Young in 2009 while a member of the Atlanta Braves. He was 15-10 with a 2.87 ERA in 2009.
More information to come as we find out.
