Senior Editor – Through The Fence Sports Corp: Jonathan Sumple
After an elbow injury in college ended Jon’s dreams of pitching in the pros, he opted for the next best thing: sports reporter. He covered prep and community sports as a correspondent for The Ledger in Lakeland, FL, while attending Division II baseball powerhouse Florida Southern College. During the summers, he was The Ledger’s beat writer for the single-A Lakeland Tigers and Winter Haven Red Sox. Upon graduation, he landed a position at The Leesburg Commercial in Central Florida where he covered the USFL’s Orlando Renegades, Tampa Bay Bucs, Florida Gators football, PGA golf and prep sports throughout the region. He twice won the Florida Sports Writers Association first-place award for investigative journalism on the subjects of steroid use side-effects (1985) and chewing tobacco health-impacts (1986) – with the latter facilitating rule changes regarding tobacco and snuff usage at local high schools. Jon left the sportswriting world for a 20+-year marketing career in South Florida, where he was a season-ticket holder for the Florida Marlins from the inaugural season until 2009, when he relocated to Seattle. His business career required frequent travel, allowing Jon to attend baseball games at 20 different MLB parks over the years. He vows to complete the circuit in the not-to-distant future. Jon can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org
